Wolmyeong Lake 〉
Within the embrace of Wolmyeong Park is the first water source built in 1912 to supply drinking water to citizens, which has transformed into a mist-emitting mountain lake where mountain birds and small animals quench their thirst. Beneath Seollimsan Mountain, the thousand-year-old temple Eunjuksa tells stories of the past through its ancient trees. Climbing the stairs up to Wolmyeong Park, the forest thickens and you see spring visitors enjoying the abundant forsythia and cherry blossoms in full bloom. An annual nationwide cherry blossom photography contest is held every April, drawing 300-400 photography enthusiasts competing intensely in capturing models and spectacular scenes. At the foot of Wolmyeong Park lies the Gunsan water source, and to the west is the historic Eunjuksa, enriching the park's atmosphere. Key facilities of Wolmyeong Park include the novelist Chae Mansik's literary monument, the March 1st Movement Memorial Tower, Sea Sculpture Park, and the Jeombangsan beacon site. The park is connected by ridge and valley trails to Wolmyeongsan (the symbol of Gunsan City), Janggye Mountain, Seollim Mountain, Jeombang Mountain, and Seokchi Mountain. From the trails rising between ridges and valleys, visitors can overlook Gunsan city center, Geum River dam, the West Sea, the outer harbor, the airport, and Janghang smelter. At the park's summit are an observation deck, Sea Sculpture Park, the Sutsi Pagoda (shaped like a blazing flame and a sail fluttering in the wind), the March 1st Movement Monument, the 35th Anniversary of Opening Port Memorial Tower, the Thinking Citizen statue, and Chae Mansik's literary monument. On the western slope of Seollim Mountain stands the historic Eunjuksa temple, and the first water source was created by damming the area between Jeombangsan and Seollim Mountain.
Bokseongru 〉
Bokseongru is famous as one of the three best jjambbong restaurants in Gunsan, alongside Binhaewon and Jirinseong. It is known for its rich jjambbong broth made by simmering fresh squid, mussels, cockles, and various seafood and vegetables. This local jjambbong restaurant has established itself as a popular spot where people line up to taste its dishes. Besides jjambbong, the thick muljjajang, made by finely chopping various vegetables and seafood and thickening it with starch, is also a popular menu item at Bokseongru. Additionally, in 2023, Bokseongru was selected as the 52nd [Kind Store]. Through Kind Store sponsorship, it gives back positive influence to neighbors in need and the local community.
Dongguksa 〉
Dongguksa (東國寺) was founded in 1909 by the Japanese monk Seoneungbulgwan, and operated by Japanese monks during the 36 years of the Japanese colonial period. It bears the painful history of returning to Korea on August 15, 1945. It has existed through the Korean Empire and the Japanese colonial era to the present. It is the only remaining Japanese-style temple in Korea, characterized by the Daeungjeon and monks' quarters connected by an indoor corridor. Unlike Korean temples with ornate dancheong, Dongguksa features undecorated eaves and many windows on the Daeungjeon exterior, showing typical Japanese temple traits. A branch temple of Seonunsa in Gochang in the Jogye Order's 24th district, Dongguksa's Daeungjeon was designated a National Registered Cultural Heritage site in July 2003. Its original name was Geumgang Seonsa, founded in 1909 by the Japanese monk Naejeonbulgwan, establishing a proselytizing site in Gunsan for the Jodong sect. Japanese Buddhism entered Korea in 1877 following the opening of Busan, initially by the Jodojin sect Daegok faction establishing sites from 1904, followed by the Ilyeon sect. The Japanese government's intent was to assimilate Korea, not just propagate Buddhism. The Japanese Government-General issued the Temple Ordinance on June 3, 1911, promoting Japanese Buddhism throughout Korea by building branch temples and missions. Before Geumgang Seonsa's founding, Gunsan had Bonwonsa, Gunsansa, and Anguksa temples. Naejeonbulgwan, 77 years old in 1909, opened the proselytizing site in a house in Iljotong, Gunsan, then moved it in July 1913 to the current location and constructed today's Dongguksa.
Gunsan Jungdong Hotteok 〉
A famous hotteok shop in Gunsan, operated for three generations, known for its dessert. Their hotteok is not fried in oil, resulting in a light flavor. The filling includes white glutinous barley, black beans, black rice, and black sesame, making it mildly sweet and enjoyable for all ages. The texture is between oil-fried hotteok and Chinese hotteok. Customers can eat inside the store, which is convenient in both hot summers and cold winters. However, for takeout, it is recommended to consume the hotteok within an hour, so eating soon after purchase is advised. The open kitchen allows customers to watch the hotteok-making process. In-store dining and nationwide delivery are available.
Iseongdang 〉
It originated when a Japanese man named Hirose Yastaro, who lived in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan, crossed over to Joseon in 1906 and opened a business under the name 'Izumoya.' In 1945, after liberation, Korean Mr. Lee Seok-woo took over the place where Izumoya had disappeared. The name Iseongdang is known to mean 'a bakery run by a person with the surname Lee,' but some researchers have differing views, suggesting that the name signifies 'a house prospered by a person with the surname Lee.' The current official Hanja notation for Iseongdang means 'a house prospered by a person with the surname Lee.' Red bean bread and vegetable bread are the representative menu items. ◎ A bakery with a deep history loved by Koreans and featured on various TV shows showcasing the charm of Hallyu, such as , , , and .
