Chungju Folk Craft Street 〉
On National Route 38 passing through Bonghwang-ri, Jungangtap-myeon, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, there is a special street where you can encounter old artworks and daily life items. No one officially designated this place for selling old items or antiques, but over time, artisans and antique dealers naturally gathered here. At this folk craft street, reminiscent of a giant museum, visitors can view and purchase old relics, root carvings, jars, sotdae, stone pagodas, suiseki, and folk paintings, while receiving direct explanations from artists and vendors. Sinheungsa 〉
Sinheungsa is a temple located at the foothills of Jangbyeongsan, founded in 1890 (the 27th year of King Gojong of Joseon) by Oh Yeong-geun. Oh Yeong-geun discovered the Seokgansoo spring water while gathering medicinal herbs, and after drinking the water and making a wish, his wish was fulfilled. Since then, Seokgansoo became known as a well with miraculous medicinal effects, and he built the temple by setting up two thatched huts nearby. The buildings include the Daeungbojeon, Samseonggak, Yongsingak, Beomjonggak, and hermitage quarters. Among these, the Daeungbojeon is a hip-and-gable roof building with three bays at the front and two at the side, built in 1924. Inside are the triad Buddhist statues of Amitabha Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha, and Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. Behind the statues are paintings of the Western Paradise (Geungnak Hufultanghwa), Jijang (Ksitigarbha) Thangka, and Eleven-Headed Avalokiteshvara Thangka. Around the statues are sixteen Arhat statues, four of which were excavated near the temple. In addition, a material of a Palgak-wondang type tombstone and one piece of Goryeo celadon have been unearthed.
Cheongryongsa Site 〉
The Cheongryongsa Site is the remains of a Goryeo Dynasty temple located in Oryang-dong, Sotae-myeon, Chungju-si. The founding date and founder are unknown. Within the site are cultural artifacts including the Chungju Cheongryongsa Bogakguksa Pagoda (National Treasure No. 197), the Stone Lantern with Lion in front of the Bogakguksa Pagoda at Cheongryongsa (Treasure No. 656), the Cheongryongsa Site Monument, and the Monument to the Bogakguksa Pagoda at Cheongryongsa. These artifacts show that the temple was active from the late Goryeo Dynasty through the early Joseon period. These relics are important resources for understanding Buddhist art, especially the Chungju Cheongryongsa Bogakguksa Pagoda, which is the only Joseon-era stone stupa designated as a National Treasure, reflecting its high art historical value.
