Mountains and sea beautiful at night
To see the night view of Mokpo, you need to climb Yudalsan. Depart before sunset and enjoy the view of Mokpo from several pavilions while ascending to Madangbawi, a night view lookout. At Madangbawi, you can watch the sunset and night view simultaneously. Starting from Nojeokbong, pass Opo-dae and Daehakru, where you will find the monument for the song "Tears of Mokpo." Also, in the sea in front of Sangdong Peace Plaza, you can see the so-called "Dancing Sea Fountain," where fountains and lights installed in the sea dance along with music.

Mokpo Modern History and Culture Space 〉
Mokpo Modern History and Culture Space is a site that simultaneously showcases the history of the modern trading port established during the opening of the Korean Empire with the installation of the Mokpo Customs Office, as well as the lifestyle history through the Japanese colonial period up to the post-liberation era. It is a valuable area for preservation and utilization, allowing visitors to understand the historical culture and changes in daily life of Mokpo throughout modern and contemporary times. In 2018, it was designated as the nation's first registered cultural heritage on a spatial unit basis.
Mokpo Tourism Special Zone 〉
In 2007, a 6.9 km section from the old downtown Bukhang area to Yudalsan, the original downtown, Samhakdo, Gatbawi, and the new downtown Pyeonghwa Plaza was designated as a maritime culture tourism special zone. Traces of the Japanese colonial era remain throughout, allowing visitors to explore the history of the period through sites like the old Mokpo Japanese Consulate and the Mokpo Modern History and Culture Space. The sea also offers many attractions, making it a cultural area where past and present coexist. The most visually appealing areas are Yudalsan and Gatbawi, featuring natural scenery as well as cultural spaces such as the Mokpo Natural History Museum and the National Maritime Relics Exhibition Hall. Every April, the Mokpo Yudalsan Spring Festival is held, offering a variety of activities including the sugun parade, sugun cultural military experience, concerts, and hands-on programs. Samhakdo is the stage for the annual Mokpo Harbor Festival and, under normal conditions, a pleasant place to walk along the coast connected by a bridge to the land. Mokpo locals say the city has five representative flavors: minhoe sashimi, braised hairtail, fermented skate with pork and kimchi, three-legged octopus, and seasoned crab meat. Visitors can experience not only fresh seafood and flavorful dishes from the pristine waters around Mokpo but also the beautiful natural scenery alongside history and culture spanning the modern era.
Mokpo Gatbawi 〉
★4.2(2.1k)Gatbawi, one of the eight scenic spots of Mokpo, is named because it looks like two monks wearing traditional bamboo hats (satgat). Jungbawi is said to be where a great ascetic monk once lived. There are various legends about Gatbawi, including one where a highly enlightened ascetic monk, resting briefly while crossing the Yeongsan River on his way to Nakbudo’s Dak Island, placed his satgat and staff down, which then became Gatbawi. Another legend tells of a young man in ancient Mokpo who, neglecting his sick father to earn money, returned too late and deeply regretted it, fasting for days in apology while wearing a satgat, eventually turning into the rock. A maritime pedestrian bridge along the Yeongsan River allows visitors to enjoy views above the water. The bridge rises about 1 meter at high tide and lowers following the tide, offering beautiful night scenery. It also serves as a natural learning site demonstrating rock erosion by waves and currents, making it highly educational.
